This scarce 19th C. picture button is known as Ol' Bull, named for the Norwegian virtuoso violinist, Ole Bornemann Bull (1810-1880). His father had hoped he would become a minister, but Ole desired only to play the violin. He became very famous for his skill and talent and gave thousands of concerts throughout Europe. He also gave concerts in the U.S. to great acclaim. In 1852, he obtained a large tract of land in Pennsylvania and founded a colony he called New Norway, commonly referred to as the Ole Bull Colony.
